Artist Statement
I have always loved image making. I work in a variety of mediums including oils, pastel, watercolor, pigmented wax crayons, pencil, gouache, pen and ink, and photography. I work intuitively and spontaneously, approaching each blank canvas
as an opportunity to refine what I’ve done previously and experiment with new ways of approaching whatever it is I’ve been doing – whether it’s a painting, a drawing, a photograph or combination thereof.
I am drawn to abstraction and to the landscapes of the human form. My work ranges from large to small, from abstract to realistic. When working on my
large abstractions, my focus is on the arrangement of space and the creation of forms that are evocative, lively, and mysterious. It is my desire that the viewer
will find new images within the painting each time he or she returns to it.
Some of my paintings and drawings are, in some way shape or form, manifestations of dreams and associations. Images from my dreams include volcanoes, snakes, finger puppets, Buddhas, and geckos. Buddha topples from a lotus, a hand is open
revealing a stigmata; finger puppets are perched on each finger. A car drives into the frame from a corner of the page.
My photographs are almost exclusively portraits. I am currently working on a new series of images of women, a sequel to the Goddess Project. If you are interested in commissioning a portrait, or would like more information about this show, please
contact Larry Knutson.
